It's 9:45 AM and Ms. Chen's not working on lesson plans, taking a pee break from Google slides, or scouring the net for animated GIFs to impress her kids with.
Today we had our first foodday. We ate mooncakes, Chinese food and all sorts of asian nummies. The Mid-Autumn festival takes place on the 15th day of the 8th month on the lunar calendar, which, according to the Gregorian calendar was Sept. 8 this year. All this week we have watched an assortment of videos on this major Chinese holiday, including the legend behind this festival, making of mooncakes, the wide variety of 月饼 (Yuèbǐng), etc etc. We also read related articles such as the one about the man who ate too many mooncakes.
As this is our first foodday of the year, everyone was quite excited about it. Earlier this week, we had a student bring in store-bought mooncakes (at first her grandma was going to handmake them but her little brother ended up devouring all of them the day of so she bought in a box that her family had lying around at home). Somehow, even though there were only 4 cakes, I was able to divvy it up among almost 30 students. Efficiency ftw. Ok, I lied. I did have a few backup powerpoints/pdfs/worksheets on Moodle from last semester. However, since the site got a total makeover this summer, I wasn't able to find the old page until the admin emailed me the link. Despite that, I've been swamped and sleep-deprived the past few days attempting to recover recent data the snailpace way—via memory, green tea, and endless reserves of patience.
