I started a project scaled a tad larger than my previous two in hopes that the additional mass would make creating limbs and appendages easier. Here are some in-progress photos.
I used to count diligence and speed as my two main strengths as a sculptor - that was, until my return to civilization in mid-June. I had not sculpted for nearly two months and the few times that I ventured to sit at my table and work yielded paltry results. Instead of being entirely consumed by my project, unable to eat or drink until I completed as much as I could for the day, I was afraid to approach it. My fingers had become stiff and useless, and the dexterity that had just 4 months ago come so easily was gone.
I started a project scaled a tad larger than my previous two in hopes that the additional mass would make creating limbs and appendages easier. Here are some in-progress photos. It's been nearly a month since I bisqued my fetus at CSA. I can't believe I still haven't gotten a chance to glaze her or Papillon yet, but life's more pressing matters have been pestering me nonstop...gimme a break already!! Some clumsy oaf had moved my bone-dry piece from its original resting place and broken the arm in the process so I had to glue her right arm back with a ceramic mender. Fortunately, it held through the firing and now it looks as good as new. Almost. I picked her up on the evening of 6/27 and immediately went hunting for a medium-guage wire to bend into the umbilical cord, which had, quite sadly, dissolved into smithereens in the kiln. Nevertheless, I'm eager to complete this project not only because of what it represents but also due to its mini stature (as explained in my last post with the cost of shipping in regard to item weight blah blah). It will be good to have another piece to enter into juried exhibitions this Fall. When an idea comes, I grab the nearest writing utensil, usually my iPhone, and jot down the description. Then, I sketch a very stylized, borderline stick-figure version to remember the pose. It's not that I don't value a good drawing, but more that I work better from the mind and the more time spent sketching out my visualization, the longer the wait to start on the piece. |
